PA Detachment Baltimore - Supervisor

August 2017 TO Present

• Advise senior leadership on crisis communication and technology initiatives of the Coast Guard

• Acted as Coast Guard Public Affairs representative to the U.S. Secret Service Multi-Agency Joint Information Center for large national events, to include the State of the Union

• Coordinate boating safety campaigns and media events with federal, state and local partners

• Provided technology integration and support for Hurricane Florence Public Affairs response

• Photographer at national events, to include the State Funerals of President George H.W. Bush and Senator John McCain

• Participate on panel discussions for Department of Defense Public Affairs trainees

PA Detachment Houston - Supervisor

June 2012 TO August 2017

• Established, led or participated in Type 1-3 ICS compliant multi- agency Joint Information Centers to coordinate incidents, to include a 160k gallon oil spill, an 80k gallon air and water release of a flammable gas additive, recovering blood of a potentially Ebola infected nurse, search for 33 missing men of sunken cargo ship, illegal international poaching, and other explosions, chemical releases, hurricanes, and major search and rescue activities

• Regularly provided updates and suggested courses of action to senior leadership

• Deployed for Hurricane Joaquin to facilitate national media press conference coverage

• Managed and approved media escorts, news releases, social media content, photo/video production and dissemination

• Facilitated news conferences and provided live interviews with regional, national and international media

Headquarters Acquisitions - Public Affairs Specialist

July 2010 TO June 2012

• Deployed to Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Area Command as lead of transition for emergency response website to Department of Homeland Security’s RestoreTheGulf.gov

• Led initiative to create a website for timely bilateral information sharing from Coast Guard headquarters to field, which saved the Coast Guard >$20k

• Re-designed and consolidated Coast Guard news website, USCGNews.com, to generate and publish news content; saved the Coast Guard $67k/year in website expenses

• Produced video and imagery for Gulf of Mexico seafood safety and wildlife protection efforts during Deepwater Horizon

Rafael Omar Gomez Negron, who generally goes by Gomez, joined the Coast Guard after college, speaking very little English. As he went off to boot camp, two Category 5 hurricanes threatened his Caribbean island, causing billions in damage and requiring months of recovery work just to restore power. He endured many trials, fearing the health of his family while enduring military basic training as a non-native English speaker.

Securing McCain's Rest

This weekend I had the opportunity to ride along with Station Annapolis and support a security zone as the late Senator John McCain was laid to rest. I’ve been in the Coast Guard for almost 19 years and I always enjoy opportunities to get underway, go for a flight, honor those who have served, or just do something extraordinary.
